Free electrician invoice template (Australia)

An electrician's invoice has a few jobs a generic template doesn't handle: your electrical licence number belongs on it (customers and builders expect it, and some states require it on compliance paperwork), materials and labour are usually split into separate lines, and a call-out fee often applies whether or not work proceeded.

This free template covers all of that and stays ATO-correct: the words "Tax Invoice", your ABN, per-line GST, and the right treatment if you're under the GST threshold. Download the PDF, print it or copy the structure into Word or Excel, or generate one already filled in with our free invoice generator.

Trade-specific rules

GST notes for electricians

Electrical Services: one of the largest sole-trader trades in Australia, with most sparkies invoicing a mix of labour, materials at markup, and fixed call-out fees.

  • Include your electrical licence number near your ABN; plan managers, builders and real-estate agents will bounce invoices without it.
  • Materials you on-sell (fittings, cable, breakers) carry GST at your marked-up price, not your trade price; GST is calculated on what you charge the customer.
  • A certificate of electrical safety (or equivalent in your state) is a taxable supply like any other line, so don't leave it off the invoice as a freebie unless you mean to.

Word, Excel or Google Docs

Using this electrician invoice template in other formats

Microsoft Word

Recreate the PDF’s structure with a 5-column table (description, qty, unit price, GST, amount). Keep the words “Tax Invoice” as the document title, your ABN under your business name, and add a totals block of subtotal / GST / total. Word’s tables won’t calculate GST for you, so double-check every amount: a wrong GST figure is the most common Word-template mistake we saw in real electrician invoices.

Excel / spreadsheets

Excel handles the maths: set GST per line to =ROUND(qty*unit*0.1, 2) for GST-inclusive work, and total to subtotal + GST. The trap is what Excel doesn’t do: it won’t stop you issuing two invoices with the same number, and PDFs exported from spreadsheets often crop columns, so always check the print preview before sending.

Google Docs

Same structure as Word. One advantage: a single master doc you copy per invoice keeps your numbering sequential. One warning: sharing the live doc link instead of a PDF lets the amounts change after sending, so always download as PDF before it goes to the customer.

Honestly? Every format above still means retyping your details each time. The free invoice generator fills the same ATO-correct layout in your browser and downloads the PDF, no signup required.

FAQ

Does an electrician's invoice need a licence number?

It's not an ATO requirement, but most states expect the licence number on compliance certificates, and builders, strata managers and agents routinely refuse invoices without it. Put it next to your ABN.

Do I charge GST on a call-out fee?

Yes. If you're registered for GST, the call-out fee is a taxable supply like your labour, so it carries 10% GST shown on its own line.

How do I invoice materials vs labour?

Separate lines. Materials at your charged (marked-up) price with GST per line, labour as hours × rate. It reads clearer for the customer and keeps your BAS tidy.
