Free handyman invoice template (Australia)
A handyman's invoice is a list of small jobs, not one big one. Rehang a door, patch a hole, replace a tap washer, fix a fence paling. Customers pay faster when they can see each task on its own line with the time it took, the minimum call-out you quoted, and the hardware you bought for them.
This free template is set up for exactly that: an hourly labour line or one line per task, a call-out or minimum charge line, and a materials line for the Bunnings run. It is ATO-correct out of the box ("Tax Invoice" heading, ABN, GST per line). Not registered for GST yet? Use the no-GST version on the sole trader template instead.

Trade-specific rules
GST notes for handymen
Handyman and property maintenance: lots of small jobs per visit, charged by the hour with a minimum call-out, plus the hardware picked up on the way.
- Hardware you buy for a job and charge to the customer carries GST at the price you charge, not the price on your receipt. Keep the receipts for your own GST credits.
- A call-out or minimum charge is part of the price of the job, so it carries GST like the labour does.
- Some work needs a licensed tradesperson (electrical, plumbing, gas, and in some states building work over a set value). Only invoice for work you are allowed to do, and describe it accurately.
- Not registered for GST? Use a plain "Invoice" with no GST lines, and do not use the words "Tax Invoice". Registration becomes compulsory once your turnover reaches $75,000.
Word, Excel or Google Docs
Using this handyman invoice template in other formats
Microsoft Word
Recreate the PDF’s structure with a 5-column table (description, qty, unit price, GST, amount). Keep the words “Tax Invoice” as the document title, your ABN under your business name, and add a totals block of subtotal / GST / total. Word’s tables won’t calculate GST for you, so double-check every amount: a wrong GST figure is the most common Word-template mistake we saw in real handyman invoices.
Excel / spreadsheets
Excel handles the maths: set GST per line to =ROUND(qty*unit*0.1, 2) for GST-inclusive work, and total to subtotal + GST. The trap is what Excel doesn’t do: it won’t stop you issuing two invoices with the same number, and PDFs exported from spreadsheets often crop columns, so always check the print preview before sending.
Google Docs
Same structure as Word. One advantage: a single master doc you copy per invoice keeps your numbering sequential. One warning: sharing the live doc link instead of a PDF lets the amounts change after sending, so always download as PDF before it goes to the customer.
Honestly? Every format above still means retyping your details each time. The free invoice generator fills the same ATO-correct layout in your browser and downloads the PDF, no signup required.

FAQ
Should a handyman invoice by the hour or by the job?
Either, as long as it matches what you quoted. Small mixed jobs suit an hourly rate with a minimum call-out. A fixed-price job (assemble and install a flat-pack wardrobe) suits one line at the agreed price. Mixing both on one invoice is fine.
Can I charge a minimum call-out fee?
Yes, if you told the customer before you started. Put it on its own line so it is obvious, and say in the description whether it includes the first hour.
How do I invoice materials I picked up?
As their own line, at the price you are charging (cost plus your margin, if you add one). Attach or keep the receipt; property managers sometimes ask for it.
